Introduction[edit | edit source]

So you just pulled a Delita and you've finished staring blankly at the ceiling contemplating your life choices. Though I'm sure you were hoping for one of the highly coveted 5* units, maybe a part of you might be trying to make the best of the situation. Although Moonblade is certainly a very nice trust mastery reward, it would be much nicer to put Delita to work.

Luckily for us, Delita's ability awakenings shot his power through the roof. While initial impressions on his upgraded breaks amounted to a hard "no", the global exclusive adjustments put him into a niche yet powerful position as an offensive support.

This build aims to maximize Delita's utility as an offensive support unit, primarily focused on his Helm Break and Shield Break while giving him additional options through Meditate and Cura by maximizing his SPR stat. With this build, Delita can:

  1. Increase your party's damage by 185% on vulnerable targets
  2. Recover 35-40 mp per turn,
  3. Heal 1200-1500 hp with Cura, almost 3000 hp with dualcast.
  4. Massive Healing through healing items
  5. Provide additional utility through Esper and Ability Materia.

Key Abilities[edit | edit source]

Helm Break/Shield Break[edit | edit source]

Helm Break

Any Delita build will focus on using Helm Break and Shield Break. They are simply the best DEF/SPR breaks in the game right now. We were all pleasantly surprised when Delita's enhancements gave him an extra 5% to his breaks in Global, amounting to a 35% additional damage, giving the team an unmatched total of 185% increase in damage.

Here's a comparison of Delita's breaks against common breaks found in the game.

Ability Break % Damage Increase Turns
Armor Break 15% 18% 3
Full Break
Undermine
Warp Strike
30% 43% 3
Helm Break
Shield Break
40% 67% 5
Feint Step 45% 82% 2
Ravaging Blow 50% 100% 3
Helm Break+2 (JP)
Shield Break+2 (JP)
60% 150% 5
Helm Break+2
Shield Break+2
65% 185% 5

Delita wins by a large margin. Not only is the break the best in the game, but also lasts the longest. This gives him plenty of extra turns to buff, debuff, and heal.

Helm/Shield Break will almost always be the first thing you use in a battle, and often you will only need one or the other based on your team composition. The few times you'll want to use both in a single battle is if you have a mixed physical/magic damage team, or you want a bit more damage out of your hybrid damage dealers.

Meditate[edit | edit source]

Meditate

Meditate, Delita's other signature ability, comes in the form of a beefed up Focus. A party wide 65% MAG/SPR buff for 5 turns is certainly nothing to scoff at, especially if there's a decent amount of magic damage on either team. Awakened, the skill grants a party wide buff that recovers (20 MP + 0.5x) over 5 turns. Scaled with your SPR stat, Meditate has the potential of healing 35 to 40 per turn for 5 turns.

Here's a table with expected recovery numbers:

SPR MAG Meditate Cura
700 350 42 mp 1555 hp
600 350 37 mp 1405 hp
500 350 32 mp 1255 hp
400 350 27 mp 1105 hp
300 350 22 mp 995 hp

Meditate has the benefit of having a relatively high modifier for mp recovery skills, as well as a very long duration. Other MP Skills, such as Ling's Invigorating Dance and Ace's Spirit Hand, require recasting every turn for its effect. Noctis's Cover (FFXV) lasts only 3 turns and recovers MP with a lower modifier, but compensates with an included HP regeneration (though a SPR build on a Noctis is very rare).

It appears that the MAG/SPR buff is applied before the MP Recovery buff, so take that into account if you are aiming for a target MP per turn. It amounts to a difference of 3-4 mp, but that can be an important difference.

Equip: Rikku's Pouch[edit | edit source]

Rikku's Pouch

Rikku's Pouch is a fantastic addition to Delita's kit as it gives him three additional spells to his arsenal:

  • Panacea
    • Cures all status ailments to all allies. Incredibly useful ability, and takes the pressure off your healer to cast Esunaga or some other equivalent ability.
  • Eccentrick
    • Increase LB gauge fill rate (200%) for 5 turns to all allies. Another 5-turn buff that fits into Delita's kit perfectly. Very useful if you happen to have units who benefit greatly from using their Limit Bursts (Y'shtola, Cecil, Olive, Zyrus, Kelsus, etc).
  • Chaos Grenade
    • 30% Break to ATK/DEF/MAG/SPR to all enemies, inflict random status ailments, and does a bit of damage. The break is a little redudant, but gives Delita access to ATK/MAG breaks. Definitely useful against battles with multiple enemies. You probably won't use this much.

Equip: Healer's Wisdom[edit | edit source]

Healer's Wisdom

Items got a huge buff with the addition of two things: Ilias's Healer's Wisdom and Expedition items.

Healer's Wisdom doubles the effectiveness of healing items, and they stack additively (NOTE: Needs Confirmation), so a second would give you 3x item effectiveness, a third will give you 4x, and a fourth will give you 5x. The Expedition items gives access to AoE heals and MP recovery. Putting these two together results in massive amounts of healing.

Item Base Heal 2x 3x 4x 5x
Icon-Minor Scroll of Healing.pngMinor Scroll of Healing 1500hp 3000hp 4500hp 6000hp 7500hp
Icon-Greater Scroll of Healing.pngGreater Scroll of Healing 3000hp 6000hp 9000hp 12000hp 15000hp
Icon-Minor Scroll of Recovery.pngMinor Scroll of Recovery 50mp 100mp 150mp 200mp 250mp
Icon-Greater Scroll of Recovery.pngGreater Scroll of Recovery 100mp 200mp 300mp 400mp 500mp

Of course, you also have access to Potion of Elemental Resistance, Potion of Cleansing, and other useful items. As you can see, having 4x Healer's Wisdom is a bit overkill. Unless you plan on side-healing using items exclusively, slotting in a Dualcast is likely more beneficial.

Equip: Pod 153[edit | edit source]

Pod 153

Oh buddy, Pod 153 is a great TM. If you're fortunate enough to get one a 9S from the Nier Automata banner, then you've got one of the best abilities for Delita. Because Delita has plenty of extra turns in his turn rotation, he's able to use the extra abilities from Pod 153 very efficiently.

  • A120: Repair is a 3 turn party regen that's essentially a Curaga.
  • A060: P Shield is a 40% physical party damage mitigation, which supplements meditate nicely since you don't have a DEF buff in your kit.
  • R020: Mirage is useful, but it's unlikely you'll make use it, though, as you won't use it every turn and your ATK stat isn't very high.

It's unfortunate that Nier Automata is a limited banner, but if you missed it then consider voting for 9S on a player's choice banner. There's also a small chance of another Nier event when they bring A2 Steak Sauce over to JP servers.

Baseline Equipment[edit | edit source]

Since Delita's Breaks don't require any equipment, we'll be focusing on maximizing the effect of Meditate. As such, this build will focus on optimizing his SPR stat. From there, we can adjust the build to suit the situation by swapping in relevant equipment or materia to give Delita some additional utility between refreshes.

The first item in this baseline is the best-in-slot item you can that is NOT part of a limited event or 5* character Trust Mastery Reward. The alternative choices may include limited items and are marked as such. The baselines only cover improving stats. Equipment for additional utility is in the next section.

Dual Wield Dual Wield While you can't do much against a boss that are immune to breaks, there is one thing you can do against a foe that is partially resistant. Any dual wield configuration will give you two attempts with Delita's breaks. Second Knife/Bowie Knife are better options, as you don't need to give up a materia slot for it (though this might change if we get better SPR weapons). We haven't had a whole lot of break resistant bosses (simply break immune for the most part), so this is fairly low priority.
Second Knife Second Knife
Bowie Knife Bowie Knife
Dualcast Dualcast This is a great TM if you want to improve Delita's role as a secondary healer. Healing 2500-3000 a turn is certainly not bad. This also gives Delita some flexibility with casting Bar spells, and let you dispel all effects from an ally (Dual cast Cura and Dispel, and retarget to an ally immediately after tapping). Unfortunately, he's stick with casting Esper magic, so you'll definitely want to stick with Carbuncle for this one.
Bushido - Freedom Bushido - Freedom AoE dispel can be handy against many bosses, and this skill has a respectable damage modifier as well to clear minions. Just be aware that dispelling removes Delita's breaks, so you'll have to reapply them on the next turn.
Thunder God's Plan Thunder God's Plan Niche accessory that few people will use that gives Delita three additional skills.
  • Crush Accessory is an Imperil equivalent, reducing elemental resistances to an enemy by 30%. This is great if you don't have any other implicit imperils on your team.
  • Spirit Blade is a Physical/Magic mixed (but not hybrid...) type AoE attack.
  • Ultima Sword is a decent physical single target attack. Not bad if you need a bit of extra damage. This build doesn't take full advantage of them, though you can get a decent amount of MAG due to the overlap in gear.

Espers[edit | edit source]

Esper Notes
Carbuncle
Carbuncle
Carbuncle is likely the optimal choice. Delita gains a decent amount of SPR for equipping Carbuncle, and is one of the few ways to gain access to Cura, since Delita does not have any magical affinity. Because of the high SPR in this build, Cura does a rather decent job at off-healing. Barblizzara, Barfira, and Barthundara are always welcomed additions in battles that need them, and Dispel is always good to have on hand.
Lakshmi
Lakshmi
Lakshmi is also a great contender for Delita. Stats are on par with what you would want for this build, as well as access to Cura for healing. You'll also gain Assuring Protection, Waking Protection, and Softening Protection as a rare opportunity to protect your party from some of the most dangerous status ailments. There will be days you'll miss having Dispel on Delita, but it's not a huge loss.
Siren
Siren
Siren is not a terrible fallback for Delita. The stat gains are mediocre across the board, but most other Espers don't much that helps Delita's utility or are better off on other characters. Here, he gets access to the powerful Dispel, though he will need to refresh his breaks after using it. If you lack other buffers, Attack Song and Defense Song covers Delita's gaps in buffs. Casting Shield Break and then Attack Song will give your physical damage dealers a lot of extra power. Be careful because the songs lock Delita for 3 turns, though Delita doesn't need to do all that much anyway.
Golem
Golem
Delita's defensive stats aren't terrible, with over 5000hp without any specific HP gear. Though there are plenty of better options, Delita could do much worse than having Provoke and Cover in his kit, or make use of Protagonist Halo for a 100% provoke. Magic damage will barely scratch him with this build.

If you have an Equip Staff from Roselia, and have gathered enough Y'Shtola TMs from the raid event, you can build a decent amount of SPR on the cheap. Expect to recover about 32 mp a turn, and heal 1250 hp with cura with this setup. Of course, you can beef this up with event exclusive equipment.

Another option is to give him Healing Staff as a source for Cura. This allows you to use a different Esper in place of Carbuncle.

Thanks /u/WayneJarvis_ for the suggestion.

Unit Comparisons[edit | edit source]

Unit Notes
Linglink=Ling
Ling
Ling is a very versatile support unit, offering just a bit of everything except healing (fixed giving her a Cura esper). She has been a game changer since her introduction and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Swapping Delita for Ling gives you a lot more options at the cost of power. Ling instant/short duration skills means there's a lot for her to juggle, while Delita tends to have spare turns for extra utility or item usage.
Pros: Cons:
  • Weaker Breaks, losing 103% of potential damage.
  • Shorter Break durations, requiring upkeep every other turn.
  • MP Regen skill must be cast every turn for upkeep.
  • Limited unit.
Noctislink=Noctis
Noctis
Noctis's is another catch-all unit who can do a bit of everything. Like Ling, his numbers are smaller as far as breaking/mp regeneration goes, but makes up for it with other utility, such as tanking with Fish, reviving with Comeback, or flat out doing damage with Warp Strike. Cover (FFXV) has a smaller duration and modifier, but comes with healing baked in.
Pros:
  • Can break Def with Warp Strike (40%), and MAG/SPR with Thunder Flask (AoE 30%)
  • Fire Flask is just really powerful.
  • Cover recovers MP and HP over 3 turns.
  • Can act as Damage, Tank, or Support without much change in his build.
Cons:
  • Weaker Breaks, losing 118% of potential damage.
  • Cover provides a smaller MP/HP heal, especially since Noctis is unlikely to spec into SPR
Rainlink=Rain
Rain
Rain is often overlooked as a support character due to his "Free Unit" status. By himself, though, Rain is capable of filling a lot of the support role without much effort. His ability to break all stats or buff all stats in a single turn makes for some really strong early round interactions. Often, he'll cycle between breaking, buffing, and a free turn action as long as he can keep his MP up.
Pros:
  • Can break all stats in one go with Undermine
  • Can buff all stats in one turn with Leadership
  • 100% Free
Cons:
  • Weaker Breaks and Buffs keep him from making a huge impact.
  • No MP Recovery
Ramzalink=Ramza
Ramza
Ramza is a great unit who is more focused on keeping your party alive rather than helping your party do more damage. His breaks are the opposites of Delita's, breaking ATK and MAG instead. With ability awakening, Ramza's breaks are almost on par with Delita's as far as numbers go. Hero's Rhyme is also an incredible ability, buffing all stats while singing, and gains the ability to recovery HP and MP with awakening. Unless you really need that damage, Ramza with abilities awakened might replace Delita completely.
Pros:
  • Strong ATK and MAG breaks with long durations, severely crippling anything that's vulnerable
  • Buffs all stats with Hero's Rhyme
  • Heals and Recovers MP with Ability Awakening with good modifiers.
Cons:
  • No offensive breaks.
  • Singing reduces his flexibility as he can't act while singing (but he's basically already doing everything...).
  • Might not ever get his ability awakened at the rate GL is going...
