Unit Summaries (7★ Units)

(return to Unit Rankings)

2B

  • Extremely powerful breaker and lightning physical chainer.

A.I. Katy

  • Physical/magical cover tank who can also provide 70% breaks.
  • Typically must use her cover each turn to reapply the barrier, or she's at a higher risk of dying.
  • Alternately, she can be built for damage and used as a chainer, although this is a much less potent option.

A2

  • Powerful physical chainer that automatically provides a 50% ATK/MAG break while chaining.
  • Chains with the Absolute Mirror of Equity family.

Ace

  • Decent support unit with a bit of bonus offensive potential.
  • Unfortunately, his buffs are random, but even the worst case is still decent.
  • He can also cap chains with his LB and imperil fire/lightning/light by 75%.

Adam Jensen

  • Competent fire/lightning physical chainer with innate dual wield.
  • Has extremely high burst damage via his cooldown skill, and very low damage on other turns.
  • Has a 45% full break.

  • Reaches 80% dodge with just two copies of his own TM, making it very easy to gear him for 100%.

  • Chains with the Absolute Mirror of Equity family.

Ang

  • Strong fire physical finisher.
  • Relies heavily on his limit burst for optimal damage output.

Aranea

  • Good physical finisher.
  • Has no utility and requires several turns of setup for one turn of mediocre burst damage.

  • Can grant ailment/stop immunity to allies and buff stats by 120%.
  • Has AoE heals/MP restoration, at the cost of LB gauge.

Ayaka

  • Powerful healer with great utility.
  • She can provide massive healing, reraise team members, restore MP, AoE fill the LB gauge, grant immunity to stop, and protect the team with AoE barriers.
  • Her LB will also remove breaks and charm, but it takes forever to fill up.

Bai Hu & Zhu Que

  • Great fire/lightning physical chainer.
  • Can swap elements mid-fight.
  • Chains with the Divine Ruination family.
  • Has an alternate SPR-heavy build, but this option deals much less damage.

  • His damage output is heavily affected by randomness, and may break some chains.

Barbariccia

  • Great magical wind chainer.
  • Can cap her chains with Raging Wind for massive damage after several turns of ramp-up, or instead cap with Aeroja for AoE damage.
  • Chains with the Tornado family.

Bart

  • Bizarre mix of dodge-based provoke tank, support, and chainer.
  • His chaining damage is fairly average.

  • Chains with the Kingsglaive, Tornado, and Flood families.

Basch

  • Solid physical and magical cover tank.
  • Has some support capabilities in the form of breaks and buffs.

Beatrix

  • Powerful ATK/MAG breaker and chainer.
  • Her damage suffers tremendously if she tries to chain and break at the same time, so you will often just focus on breaking and let her partner do most of the damage, or bring a separate breaker and just have her chain.

Beowulf

Beryl

  • Solid unit that can fill several roles.

  • Has Curaja along with a solid tanking kit.
  • LB is a powerful 54% mitigation cooldown that also refills the team's MP.

Christine

  • Ice magic chainer.
  • Technically chains with several families, but in practice, her damage will plummet if she is not paired with a copy of herself.

Cid

  • Physical finisher.
  • Requires several turns of setup, and relies heavily on external imperils in order to deal good damage, but can burst very hard in the right circumstances.

Circe

Citan

  • Requires an external imperil. Unlike most chainers, he cannot apply one himself.
  • Chains with the Absolute Mirror of Equity family.

Cloud (KH)

  • Physical chainer.
  • Has no imperils of his own.
  • Chains with the Divine Ruination family.

Crimson

  • Fire physical chainer.
  • Chains with the Divine Ruination and Absolute Mirror of Equity families, but the bulk of his damage comes from his LB, meaning it's far from ideal to pair him with anyone other than a duplicate.

Dark Fina

  • Competent magic chainer.
  • She is locked into using three elements at once, has ramp up time, and will suffer greatly if she dies or if the boss gets dispelled.
  • Her damage is absolutely terrible unless you unlock her latent abilities.

Dark Knight Cecil

  • Terrible dark physical finisher.
  • Has lots of human killer passives, but even with those, his damage is not competitive.

Dark Mage Exdeath

  • Wind/earth/dark magic chainer.
  • Chains with the Chaos Wave family.

Delita

  • Decent dark physical chainer.
  • His damage increases significantly if the enemy is susceptible to DEF breaks.

  • Competent fire magical finisher.
  • Has very high modifiers, but his damage output is limited by his low MAG.

Dressy Aileen

  • Excellent earth physical chainer with solid utility.
  • Can also use light, although she has no imperil for that element.
  • Chains with the Absolute Mirror of Equity family.

Duke

  • Decent ice physical finisher.
  • Requires several turns of setup.
  • Can also be used as a subpar chainer, but the damage is low and he has no partners.

Elena

  • Extremely powerful hybrid chainer with elemental flexibility and buffing capabilities.
  • Can provide stat buffs and mitigation to the party.
  • Chains with the Stardust Ray and Bolting Strike families.

Elephim

  • Great support unit with both breaks and buffs.
  • Can break ATK/MAG by 55% on T1 while also buffing DEF/SPR, then eventually ramp into her LB for a 75% full break and 145% buffs to all stats.
  • Gear her for LB autofill.

Eleven

  • Fire/lightning physical chainer.
  • Chains with the Bolting Strike family.

Elfreeda

  • Competent provoke tank.
  • Can chain with a copy, although the damage is unremarkable.
  • Has 45% breaks that also dispel the enemy; can be useful for enemies that frequently buff themselves.

Ellesperis

Elly

  • Very powerful magic chainer.
  • Wind is her strongest option, but earth isn't too far behind, and she can also choose to cap some of her chains with other elements if desired.
  • Chains with the Chaos Wave family.

Emperor

  • Fire magic finisher.
  • Requires some ramp up time to hit peak damage.

Emperor Shera

  • Subpar fire physical chainer.
  • Can imbue himself and another unit with fire, but this lacks 100% uptime and his terrible damage makes him a poor chaining partner.
  • Chains with the Divine Ruination family.

Estark

  • Mediocre dark physical chainer with innate dual wield.
  • Has a 60% ATK break.
  • Can chain with the Divine Ruination family.

Esther

  • Ludicrously powerful lightning physical chainer.
  • Chains with the Bolting Strike, Absolute Mirror of Equity, and Aureole Ray (singlecast only) families.
  • Has absurd survivability for a damage dealer, with over twice as much HP as most other chainers on top of innate dodge and guts.

  • Requires quite a few turns of ramp-up to reach his maximum damage potential.
  • Chains with the Absolute Mirror of Equity family.

Fei

  • Dark physical chainer with very high damage output.

  • Chains with the Absolute Mirror of Equity family (only with his dark move).

Felix

  • Powerful fire/earth hybrid chainer.
  • Has no real chaining partners-- technically, several of his moves do belong to the Aureole Ray and Octaslash families, but those moves are very weak and he wants to cap his chains with the much stronger Salute - Blade Rush, something that only another Felix can do.
  • Requires several turns to really get going.

Flammie

  • Can serve as a buffer or as a finisher, but not both at the same time.
  • As a buffer, he has some uncommon and useful utility, but is also missing some standard buffer abilities, such as 100% uptime on general mitigation and AoE MP regen, which may force you to rely on other units to cover the gaps in his kit.
  • As a finisher, deals fairly good damage.
  • Can chain with the Aureole Ray family.

Fohlen

  • Mediocre physical finisher.
  • His burst is decent but requires several turns of setup.
  • He can also chain, but the damage is awful.

Folka

  • Healer with a varied support kit.

Freya (VP)

  • Mediocre magic chainer.
  • Burns through MP very quickly and is forced to use a mix of elements and non-elemental damage.

Fryevia

Gilgamesh

  • Mediocre physical chainer.
  • Can gear for almost any type of killer passive by equipping different weapon types.
  • Has a 55% full break.
  • He has two moves with Divine Ruination frames. The baseline move does only 7 damage. He has a much stronger version that he can unlock by using his limit burst, but it can take several turns to get to that point.
  • He fares better when chaining with a duplicate, as he can then use Tri-Attack starting from turn 1.

Gladiolus

  • Physical cover tank.
  • His other skills are, unfortunately, mostly irrelevant.

Grim Lord Sakura

  • Fire/dark magic chainer with support capabilities.
  • Chains with the Chaos Wave family.
  • Can buff DEF/SPR, provide 35% AoE mitigation, reraise allies, grant break/partial ailment immunity, apply barriers, restore MP, and slightly fill the LB gauge.

Heavenly Technician Lid

  • Powerful breaker.
  • Her T1 AoE breaks aren't quite as strong as those of some other units, but she can later on upgrade them to 79%, which are among the strongest in the game.

High Seraph Ultima

  • Extremely powerful non-elemental magic chainer with solid utility.
  • Chains with the Chaos Wave family.
  • Can simultaneously dispel enemy buffs and ally debuffs, while leaving enemy debuffs and ally buffs intact.
  • Burns through MP extremely quickly.

Ignacio

  • Fire physical finisher who can also imbue other units with fire.

  • Can imbue allies with several different elements.

Immortal Flame Katy

Jecht

Jiraiya

  • Subpar hybrid chainer with some elemental flexibility.

  • Excellent hybrid chainer with elemental flexiblity and support capabilities.

  • Chains with the Absolute Zero, Bolting Strike, and Chaos Wave families.

Kunshira

  • Good hybrid chainer with great elemental flexibility.

  • Chains with the Aureole Ray family.

Kurasame

  • Hybrid ice chainer with high damage output.
  • Chains with the Quick Hit family.

Lenneth

  • Good dark physical chainer.

Lightning

  • Mediocre lightning physical chainer.
  • Chains with the Quick Hit family.
  • Buffs her own stats by 150%, which can allow you to forego a buffer.

Lila

  • Strong physical chainer.

  • She can switch between fire and lightning damage.
  • Chains with the Graviton Cannon and Stardust Ray families.

  • Can provide significant self-sustain for her own HP/MP.

Livid Shantotto

  • Primarily fire/water magic chainer.

  • Chains with the Chaos Wave family.

Loren

  • Extremely powerful breaker with solid physical chaining and elemental flexibility.
  • Can chain with the Onion Slice and Aureole Ray families.

Lotus Mage Fina

  • Excellent healer with Curaja and Reraise.
  • Can also apply AoE reraise.
  • With her latent abilities, she can provide good buffs and elemental resistances via W-Ability, although the low healing on the turns that she refreshes these effects might be a problem.

Lovely Katy

  • Healer that can also provide AoE reraise.
  • Has a fairly bare-bones kit by healer standards.

Lulu

  • Solid water magic chainer.

  • Only chains with a dupe.

Machina

  • Solid physical chainer with several elemental options and amazing utility.
  • Can break ATK/MAG and DEF/SPR by 70% on-demand, although this only lasts for one turn and will decay into weaker breaks over the next several turns.

  • Can AoE buff physical/magical mitigation and provide SPR break immunity.
  • Chains with the Absolute Mirror of Equity family.

Malphasie

  • Powerful wind/dark hybrid chainer.

  • Chains with the Absolute Mirror of Equity family (with her fire move only).

Maritime Strategist Nichol

  • Powerful buffer with access to a wide range of potent abilities.
  • Can buff all stats, regenerate HP/MP for the party, provide mitigation, buff elemental resistances, and cure breaks. Almost all of his abilities can be dualcast via Linked Stance.
  • Can also help to fill the LB and esper gauges.

Marquis de Léon

  • Terrible provoke tank with a few very weak chaining skills.
  • Has a 60% break on a 5 turn cooldown, which can allow him to weaken nasty threshold attacks, but he cannot serve as a primary breaker.

Mediena

  • Magic ice chainer.
  • Can buff the party's stats and restore MP.
  • Chains with the Absolute Zero and Freeze families.

Mercenary Ramza

  • Versatile tank. Able to provoke and cover physical or magical damage.
  • His magic cover has a cooldown, which may be a problem if you're planning to rely on reraise, or if the boss dispels him.
  • Is immune to all ailments and charm, is 50% resistant to Stop, and has 30% innate resistance to all ailments.
  • Has Entrust.

Monk Sabin of Kolts

Mordegon

  • Ice/dark magic chainer.
  • Requires extensive ramp up time to reach peak damage, and suffers greatly if he dies.
  • Can provide powerful breaks, but must be paired with another copy of himself so that they can stagger their break cooldowns to maintain 100%. And this won't work well against bosses that must be dispelled frequently.
  • Chains with the Absolute Zero family.

Morgana

  • Evoke chainer.
  • Suffers from insufficient orb generation, making it impossible to maintain her ideal damage rotation without significant external support.
  • Chains with the Absolute Zero and Chaos Wave families.

Myra

  • Excellent healer that can also provide buffs.
  • Can bring stat buffs, partial ailment immunity, break immunity, and charm immunity.

  • Damage output is high while Armiger Wakes, then plummets to almost nothing for several turns while waiting for the unlock to cool down again.

Nyx

  • Physical fire chainer with good damage and utility.
  • Can AoE fill the team's LB by sacrificing his life.
  • Relies on Fixed Dice for good damage output, which means that he can be very inconsistent.

Olberic

  • Physical cover and provoke tank.
  • His LB provides a powerful 40% general mitigation buff to the party for three turns.
  • Chains with the Aureole Ray family.

Olive

  • Lightning finisher.
  • Can deal significant burst damage with Immolation Blast, although you'll need to raise or reraise her, as she dies when she uses it.

  • Can break enemy DEF by 74%, and buff several elemental resistances by 70%.
  • Chains with the Onion Slice family.

Onion Knight Refia

  • Physical damage dealer with elemental flexibility.
  • Chains with the Onion Slice family, but not very well, due to requiring unlocks.

Orlandeau

Popstar Katy

  • Absolutely terrible magical chainer/finisher.
  • Far worse than most 6* units.
  • Do not use.

Primrose

  • Buffer with a fairly standard kit.
  • Can buff mitigation by up to 40% (but drops down to 30% on some turns due to cooldowns), provides stat buffs, imbues allies with dark, and can fill the LB gauge.
  • Chains with the Chaos Wave family.

Prishe

  • Physical chainer.
  • Locked behind setup turns and has no chaining partners.
  • Can provide AoE reraise.

Prompto

  • Breaker with chaining capabilities.
  • Chains with the Octaslash family.
  • Has a 65% AoE ATK/MAG break and a 70% DEF break.

Pure Summoner Rydia

  • Weak summoner.
  • Requires setup before bursting for very low amounts of damage.
  • Has niche applications against bosses with high mitigation, as evoke damage will ignore said mitigation.

Pyro Glacial Lasswell

  • Fire/ice physical chainer.
  • Chains with the Absolute Mirror of Equity family.
  • His damage relies heavily on unlocking his latent abilities.

Qin

  • Support unit that suffers from extensive setup time.
  • Cannot provide all of the same benefits at once that other buffers can, forcing you to pick and choose which effects you want.

Queen

  • Lightning physical chainer.
  • Has very high survivability thanks to the 200% DEF/SPR buffs from Berserk+2.
  • Provides MP regen for the party.
  • Chains with the Quick Hit family.

Radiant Lightning

  • Lightning physical chainer.
  • Can serve as a breaker in a pinch, although her damage would suffer greatly and she would struggle with bosses that get dispelled.
  • Chains with the Absolute Mirror of Equity family.

  • Fire and ice physical chainer.
  • Imbues himself with both elements as part of his rotation, so his damage suffers noticeably if the enemy is immune to either one.
  • Can buff most elemental resistances.
  • Chains with the Divine Ruination and Absolute Mirror of Equity families.

Ramza

  • Mediocre support unit with breaks and buffs, although he has trouble providing both at once in a clean rotation.
  • Can dualcast 60% breaks for all four stats.
  • Can sing for buffs/regen, but you will have gaps in the song buff uptime if you try to have him also maintain breaks.
  • Consider giving Cradle of Horns to him or another party member to cover those gaps.

Randi

Reberta

  • Fire/ice/lightning physical chainer or finisher.
  • It can be difficult to chain her consistently due to the timing required to properly cap her delayed chains with her timed jump.

Red XIII

  • Powerful physical chainer with elemental flexibility.
  • Can provide AoE mirage.
  • Chains with the Stardust Ray family.

Regina

  • Powerful physical finisher.
  • Can also serve as a chainer, as her LB will chain with a copy of her.
  • Suffers from very, very low survivability, and keeping her alive will be a struggle on many fights.

Rem

  • Unusual combination of healer and chainer.
  • Can dualcast Curaja and Tornado, allowing her to serve as a support chainer.
  • Unlike most 7* healers, does not have the ability to heal and reraise on the same turn.

Rena

  • Healer with access to powerful buffs.
  • Relies heavily on her LB, but can struggle to fill it up consistently unless you gear for it at the expense of healing stats.

Riku

Roy

  • Support unit with strong buffs and breaks on T1. However, as soon as they expire, he becomes significantly worse because he can't refresh them with the same potency.
  • Works best when paired with another breaker who cannot break well on T1.

Rinoa

  • Strong non-elemental magic finisher.
  • Can slightly fill ally LB gauges with Aura.

Rivera

  • Unusual support unit able to turn any ally into a provoke tank or AoE physical cover tank, although whoever she picks will be significantly less durable than a "normal" tank.
  • Can provide AoE Mirage, restore MP, and heal.

Sacred Shield Charlotte

  • Extremely durable provoke and magic cover tank with incredible support skills.
  • All of her skills last four turns, instead of the more common two or three, giving her more spare turns.
  • Can buff general mitigation by a whopping 50%, magic mitigation by 30%, fill LB gauges, buff light/ice resistance, buff DEF/SPR, and more.
  • Can chain with the Aureole Ray, Disorder, and Absolute Zero families.

Seabreeze Dark Fina

  • Competent magic chainer.
  • She is locked into using two elements at once, has ramp up time, and will suffer greatly if she dies or if the boss gets dispelled.
  • Her damage is absolutely terrible unless you unlock her latent abilities.

Seaside Nichol

  • Support unit focusing exclusively on defensive buffs.
  • Can provide significant DEF/SPR buffs, all three types of mitigation, and some minor barriers.
  • Unfortunately, his physical/magical mitigation buffs cannot be dualcast, which means he cannot provide much in the way of HP/MP restoration while maintaining those.
  • Can cure imperils and berserk (as well as breaks, charm, and stop).

Serena

  • Healer with good utility.
  • Can buff magic mitigation by 30%, provide AoE reraise, grant ST ailment/charm/stop/break immunity (with AoE on a cooldown), restore MP, and briefly buff general mitigation by 40%.

  • Light and dark physical chainer.
  • Chains with the Absolute Mirror of Equity family.
  • His damage requires several turns to ramp up.

Sephiroth (KH)

Shadow Lord

Sieghard

  • Physical cover and provoke tank.
  • He can cover magic, but isn't particularly great at doing so, as his magic cover ability has a cooldown and his stats are more aimed at surviving physical damage.
  • His LB provides a powerful 45% general mitigation buff to the party for three turns.

Sol

  • Light/dark magic chainer.
  • Chains with the Chaos Wave family.

Sophia

  • Excellent magical chainer with elemental flexibility.
  • Chains with the Chaos Wave and Quake families.

Sora

Squall

  • Solid physical chainer with elemental flexibility.
  • Can also function as a finisher, although his hits are spread out and may not fit well into many chains.
  • Technically chains with the Absolute Mirror of Equity family, but his chaining moves are very weak and the bulk of his damage comes from capping his own chains with Keen Edge, which would break the chain when done with anyone but another Squall.

Summer Fina & Lid

  • Excellent breaker with incredible utility.
  • In addition to providing breaks, has strong AoE healing, AoE reraise, AoE MP recovery, can grant a physical water Aureole Ray chaining move to allies and herself, can imbue allies with water (although this may also charm them), buff water resistance, imperil several elements, buff LB fill rate, and fill the LB gauge.

Summer Folka & Citra

  • Excellent water/light evoke chainer with incredible utility.
  • Can grant ailment/break/charm/stop resistance to allies, buff water/light resistance, buff stats, AoE recover LB, buff LB fillrate, provide healing and mitigation (on a cooldown), and imbue allies with light (which may charm them).

Sylvie

  • Excellent support unit with incredible utility.
  • Can provide typed mitigation, stat buffs, ailment immunity, break immunity, and massive elemental resistances.

  • Has 70% breaks for ATK/MAG and DEF/SPR, albeit on a cooldown.

Tiana

  • Very powerful earth magic chainer.
  • Chains with the Quake family.
  • Can help to sustain the party's HP/MP via her limit burst.

Tidus

  • Good DH water physical chainer.
  • Technically chains with the Quick Hit family, but his rotation is a mess. Constant switching between single cast, dual cast, and triple cast means he has no real partners.

Tifa

  • Excellent water physical chainer.
  • Requires several turns of ramp up.
  • Chains with the Divine Ruination family.

Trance Terra

  • Very powerful magic chainer with a bit of elemental flexibility.

  • Very high MP consumption.

Veritas of the Dark

  • Good dark physical chainer.
  • Has a bit of utility in the form of AoE mitigation, AoE full break, 74% ATK break on his LB, and AoE dark resistance.
  • Chains with the Divine Ruination family.

Veritas of the Flame

  • Powerful fire finisher.
  • Can burst extremely hard via his cooldown.
