Even though it's called a rare summon, the game itself revolves around getting strong rare summon units to defeat stronger foes. Based on the visible summon rate on the JP version (As of May 1, 2017, JP rates have been increased and does not reflect current GL rates), these are the chances to pull rare summon unit of the following rarities:

Rarity Crystal Featured Unit Off-banner Unit Total
3-star3 Star Rarity Blue 20% 60% 80%
4-star4 Star Rarity Gold 4.75% 14.25% 19%
5-star5 Star Rarity Rainbow 0.5% 0.5% 1%

Note that these rates are not published by Gumi, they were obtained from the published rates for the JP version (before their May 1, 2017 rate increase), and surveys have experimentally shown them to be roughly consistent with the rates in GL.

No more troll rainbow crystal after gacha change

Whenever there are more than one featured unit of the same rarity, the chance is split evenly among them. Off-banner unit are also split evenly among remaining non-featured units. This kind of split is called a normalized pull, where one unit is not preferred over another. Normalized pull was introduced to the game without any notice starting from the first FFXIII banner in December 2, 2016.

While rare summon units have several rarities available for awakening, their base rarities differs from one to another. Rare summon unit can only be summoned from their base rarities. For example, if you happen to summon a 5-star5 Star Rarity unit from a rainbow crystal, that unit will be a base 5-star5 Star Rarity. This change, commonly called gacha change, happens after the update to version 2.0.0 in February 23, 2017.

Crystal might upgrade to a higher rarity during summoning. However, this is just a cosmetic, and does not impact the summoning rate at all. Even before cracking the crystal open, the unit have been summoned by the game.

You can increase the summoning rate by using a batch summon, 10+1 summons, for Lapis5,000 or by using a 4★+ Guaranteed Ticket, given from various promotion. In case of the 10+1 summons, only the first summon has an increased rate, while the rest are using the rate seen above.

The exact rates for the guaranteed-4★ are unknown; surveys of the player base indicate that they are significantly lower for gold crystals than the published rates for JP.

JP Rates (published)
Rarity Crystal Featured Unit Off-banner Unit Total
4-star4 Star Rarity Gold 47.5% 47.5% 95%
5-star5 Star Rarity Rainbow 3.75% 1.25% 5%
GL Rates (estimated from surveys)
Rarity Crystal Featured Unit Off-banner Unit Total
4-star4 Star Rarity Gold 23.75% 71.25% 95%
5-star5 Star Rarity Rainbow 3.75% 1.25% 5%
